Chiefs beat Raiders 30-27 as NFL unbeaten field shrinks to three
Kansas City defeated Las Vegas 30-27 on Sunday to preserve their unbeaten start, leaving the Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings as the NFL's only 4-0 teams. According to BBC Sport's week-four report, five teams entered the weekend without a defeat, but losses for the Raiders and Buffalo Bills reduced that group to three.
Watch the highlights:
The meeting between Kansas City and Las Vegas remained unsettled until the final play. The Raiders took a 13-10 advantage into the fourth quarter, which brought three changes of lead. Kenneth Walker scored twice within 19 seconds for the Chiefs, a burst made possible by a forced fumble on a kick-off return that immediately handed possession back to Kansas City.
Walker ended the game with 177 rushing yards on 22 attempts, while Tyquan Thornton contributed 111 receiving yards and two touchdowns. A Brock Bowers touchdown kept Las Vegas in contention, but the Raiders' last chance ended when Kirk Cousins was tackled while attempting a pass and the ball was intercepted. Las Vegas, who won only three games last season, could not turn their 3-0 start into a fourth victory.
San Francisco also needed a strong finish to maintain their perfect record, beating Denver 24-14 after the teams had remained level at 3-3 until late in the third quarter. Christian McCaffrey scored a fourth-quarter touchdown before Jaylen Waddle responded for the Broncos. George Kittle then secured the result with a catch-and-run touchdown. The BBC reported that 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has thrown 11 touchdown passes, with one interception and no sacks through four games.
Minnesota took a different route to 4-0, overcoming Miami 15-10 with all their points supplied by Will Reichard's five field goals. The Vikings joined Kansas City and San Francisco in extending their winning starts, while Buffalo's unbeaten run ended at home against New England in a 29-26 defeat.
Drake Maye threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns in the Patriots' win. Buffalo had moved ahead on Josh Allen's 34-yard scoring pass to Keon Coleman with four minutes remaining, but Efton Chism's one-handed touchdown catch restored New England's lead. The Patriots then intercepted Allen to complete the victory, ensuring the Bills could not join the three remaining unbeaten teams.
