James and Carpenter score twice as Chelsea beat Tottenham 6-2
Chelsea beat Tottenham 6-2 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter each scoring twice in a Women's Super League match that was level at half-time. According to Suzanne Wrack's report for the Guardian, the hosts overcame a competitive opening period before scoring five times after the interval to secure the win.
Watch the highlights:
James opened the scoring in the 25th minute after winning possession from Toko Koga. She advanced towards goal and finished from a narrow angle, but Tottenham responded before the break. Julie Blakstad supplied the cross for Matilda Vinberg to head in the equaliser, leaving Martin Ho's side at 1-1 after a first half in which they had troubled Chelsea.
The decisive spell came between the 58th and 67th minutes, when Chelsea scored three times. Carpenter restored the lead after Alyssa Thompson attacked down the left and delivered a cutback. Four minutes later, James collected Lucy Bronze's pass near the centre circle, carried the ball forward, beat Koga and curled her second goal past Lize Kop.
Sjoeke Nüsken then made it 4-1 after being introduced from the bench. Keira Walsh set her up with a flicked pass, and the substitute finished with a rising shot. The Guardian's live coverage recorded Nüsken, Erin Cuthbert and Maika Hamano entering together on the hour, before Chelsea stretched the advantage. James subsequently went close to a hat-trick, forcing a save from Kop before being replaced.
The scoring accelerated again late on. Hamano struck Chelsea's fifth in the 86th minute with a curling effort into the top corner. Signe Gaupset answered a minute later after taking possession from Walsh and finishing low for Tottenham. Carpenter completed her double in the first minute of added time, turning and scoring to restore Chelsea's four-goal margin.
The result followed Tottenham's 6-1 loss to London City Lionesses, making this their second successive game conceding six. Taha Hashim's live report for the Guardian noted that Spurs have now lost all 14 WSL meetings with Chelsea. For Sonia Bompastor, the victory came in her 50th league match in charge, with two substitutes joining James and Carpenter on the scoresheet.
