Chelsea Open Talks Over €40m-Rated Atalanta Defender Honest Ahanor
Chelsea are in talks to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, according to BBC Sport, but no agreement has been confirmed. The 18-year-old Italian mainly plays at left-back and became a regular starter in Serie A last season, making him the latest young defender to attract Chelsea’s attention.
Watch the highlights:
BBC Sport reports that Atalanta are prepared to sell Ahanor if their €40m (£34.3m) valuation is met. Brighton previously made a €34m (£29m) bid earlier in the summer, but Atalanta rejected that offer. The difference between the two figures remains significant, and the report does not state that Chelsea have submitted a bid matching the Italian club’s asking price.
Chelsea had already expressed interest in Ahanor when they signed Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra in July. Ahanor himself joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer on a three-year contract. That transfer was reported at €16m, with a further €4m possible in add-ons.
Ahanor made 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta last season and established himself in the starting side. He also made his Champions League debut in September, appearing in a 2-1 victory over Club Brugge. His progress brought international recognition in May, when Italy called him into the squad for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has continued reshaping the squad since taking charge at Stamford Bridge in July. The club have already signed England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m and added experienced Premier League players Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. The earlier deal for Palestra also established a recent transfer connection between Chelsea and Atalanta.
The discussions over Ahanor are therefore part of an active recruitment period, but the current position remains uncertain. Atalanta’s willingness to sell is conditional on their valuation being met, while Brighton’s rejected offer provides the only confirmed bid figure cited in the BBC report. Until the clubs reach terms, Ahanor remains an Atalanta player under the contract he signed last summer.
