Chelsea substitutes transform Carabao Cup tie as Leeds are beaten 6-3

What happened: Chelsea came from two goals down to beat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge and advance to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. BBC Sport reported that all six Chelsea goals arrived in the second half, turning a difficult evening into a convincing final score after the home side had been booed off at halftime.

Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso made nine changes to his lineup, while Leeds manager Daniel Farke made eight. Leeds took control of the contest and moved ahead through defender Tarik Muharemovic. Alonso responded to his team’s poor first-half display by making four changes at the interval, introducing Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James.

Brenden Aaronson then doubled Leeds’ advantage shortly after the restart, but Chelsea’s established players changed the direction of the tie. Palmer scored twice and Neto also found the net. Rogers did not score, but BBC Sport credited him with helping create four goals from open play during the comeback.

Danny Welbeck was the notable success among Chelsea’s starters, scoring twice at the age of 35. Valentin Barco added Chelsea’s fifth goal, although BBC Sport noted that he had also been partly responsible for Leeds’ second. The turnaround completed a nine-goal cup match and kept Chelsea’s pursuit of domestic silverware alive.

The night was more difficult for several of Chelsea’s younger and fringe players. Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens were removed at halftime, as was 16-year-old debutant Reggie Watson after he had been booked. Geovany Quenda, a £40 million signing from Sporting, remained on the bench and did not add to his one substitute appearance for the club.

Why it matters: Alonso accepted responsibility for making the match difficult for his players and said he would review his selection decisions. The result secured another competitive fixture for a 27-player Chelsea squad that has no European football this season. It also left a sharp contrast between a disrupted starting team and the substitutes who rescued the tie, while preserving future cup opportunities for players seeking more minutes.
