Chelsea overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge and advance to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. BBC Sport reported that Xabi Alonso's much-changed side struggled badly before a group of established players came off the bench and transformed the contest.

Alonso made nine changes to Chelsea's starting lineup, while Leeds manager Daniel Farke made eight. Leeds nevertheless settled more quickly. Defender Tarik Muharemovic opened the scoring, and Brenden Aaronson doubled the visitors' advantage shortly after the interval. Young attackers Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens were withdrawn at the break, while summer signing Geovany Quenda did not make a strong case for a larger role. The comeback supplied a spectacular result without erasing the concerns raised by the first half.

Alonso accepted responsibility for the selection and setup, saying after the match that he needed to help his players better and make the right decisions for them to show their best level. Chelsea have conceded at least twice in four of his first five games in charge, so the defensive instability is becoming an early theme of his tenure.

Progress is especially useful for a Chelsea squad containing 27 senior players and supported by a productive academy. With no European football this season, domestic cup ties offer competitive minutes to players outside the regular league lineup and preserve another route to silverware. Ironically, the senior substitutes' rescue act also protected future opportunities for the fringe players whose first-half performance had placed Chelsea's cup run at risk.

The next round will test whether Alonso can rotate without losing the control and intensity supplied by Palmer, Rogers, Neto and James. The immediate question is not Chelsea's attacking depth, which delivered six second-half goals, but whether the coaching staff can build a more reliable platform before another opponent takes advantage of a slow start.
