Chelsea score six after halftime to beat Leeds 6-3 in Carabao Cup

Chelsea recovered from two goals down to beat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge and advance to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. All six of Chelsea's goals arrived after halftime, transforming a match in which the home side had been booed off at the interval following a disjointed opening display.

BBC Sport reported that Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso made nine changes to his starting lineup, while Leeds manager Daniel Farke changed eight players. Leeds settled more quickly and defender Tarik Muharemovic opened the scoring. Brenden Aaronson doubled the visitors' advantage shortly after the restart, leaving Chelsea's place in the competition under serious threat.

Alonso responded by sending on Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James at halftime. The changes reshaped the contest: Palmer scored twice, Neto also found the net and Rogers helped create four goals from open play. Danny Welbeck, one of the players who had started the match, scored twice during the comeback.

Valentin Barco scored Chelsea's fifth goal, although BBC Sport noted that he had also been partly responsible for Leeds' second. The home side's surge ultimately carried them to a three-goal victory despite Leeds adding a third goal of their own. Chelsea's established substitutes had turned a vulnerable position into a place in the next round.

The match also brought a senior debut for Chelsea midfielder Reggie Watson at 16. He was booked and then withdrawn at halftime alongside young attackers Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens. Alonso's selection had offered opportunities to squad players, but the head coach needed four proven replacements immediately after the break to change the direction of the tie.

Afterward, Alonso accepted responsibility for making the game difficult for his players and said he would review the decisions needed to help them perform at their best. According to BBC Sport, Chelsea have now conceded at least twice in four of Alonso's first five matches in charge. The immediate outcome, however, is progression in the Carabao Cup and another competitive fixture for a large Chelsea squad.
