Chelsea Set Up FA Cup Final Showdown Against Manchester City After Dominant Semi-Final Victory
Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup final with a commanding 3-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with Argentine striker Enzo Fernandez heading the Blues into an early lead before second-half goals from Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer sealed a convincing win.
Watch the highlights:
Fernandez opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a powerful header from a corner, giving Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier no chance. The goal came against the run of play, as Leeds had started the brighter side and created several promising openings through Crysencio Summerville.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino had surprised many by benching England international Cole Palmer for the start of the match, but the decision was vindicated when Brazilian forward Joao Pedro doubled the lead in the 58th minute with a deflected strike from outside the box.
Palmer was introduced in the 65th minute and required just three minutes to make his mark, converting from the penalty spot after being fouled in the area. The 22-year-old has been in scintillating form this season, with his 22 goals across all competitions making him one of the most sought-after young talents in European football.
Leeds, who are pushing for Premier League promotion via the playoffs, were unable to mount a comeback against a Chelsea side that has now won five consecutive matches in all competitions. The result sets up a final against Manchester City on June 3rd at Wembley, a repeat of the 2023 final which City won 1-0.
Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher praised the team's performance: "The boys were fantastic today. We knew Leeds would be tough, but we controlled the game from start to finish. We're delighted to reach the final and now we have two weeks to prepare for what will be an incredibly difficult match against City."
City advanced to the final with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the other semi-final on Saturday, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal. The final will mark City's fourth consecutive FA Cup final appearance, while Chelsea are seeking their first trophy under Pochettino.
