Carpenter and Buchanan score as Chelsea beat Roma to stay unbeaten
Chelsea maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Roma in the Women's Champions League on Wednesday. According to BBC Sport's match coverage, second-half goals from Ellie Carpenter and Kadeisha Buchanan settled the contest at Plough Lane, leaving Sonia Bompastor's side with two wins and a draw from their opening three league-phase fixtures.
Watch the highlights:
The hosts created a succession of first-half opportunities without finding a breakthrough. Lauren James and Alyssa Thompson were involved in their attacking play, while Wieke Kaptein sent a close-range effort over. Hannah Hampton also helped launch attacks from goal, including a pass that gave Aggie Beever-Jones a chance she could not convert. At the other end, Erin Cuthbert stopped a break by Roma captain Giada Greggi with a sliding block.
Carpenter changed the scoreline after coming on as a substitute, putting Chelsea ahead in the 51st minute. The Australian was making her 50th appearance in the competition, BBC Sport reported. Buchanan then headed in the second goal shortly before the finish, ensuring Chelsea's missed opportunities before the interval did not prevent them from securing the win.
The result also preserved Chelsea's defensive record in the league phase: they have yet to concede across their three matches. Bompastor highlighted that record afterwards, saying a strong defensive foundation was important to advancing in competitions. She also expressed confidence that the quality within her squad would continue to produce scoring opportunities, and discussed rotating players for both domestic and European matches.
Chelsea are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Women's Super League after seven games. Their start follows a season in which they lost the WSL and FA Cup titles and were eliminated from the Champions League by Arsenal in the quarter-finals. Bompastor's first campaign in charge had previously brought an unbeaten domestic treble.
Speaking about the team's development, Bompastor pointed to the adjustment following the departures of Sam Kerr, Millie Bright and Guro Reiten. Captain Cuthbert, meanwhile, credited the preparation undertaken in pre-season and said the squad's quality had already been there. Against Roma, Chelsea added another victory to that rebuilding process while keeping their European unbeaten record intact.
