Chelsea Rally From 2-0 Down to Beat Leeds 6-3 in EFL Cup

Chelsea recovered from 2-0 down to defeat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge and advance to the fourth round of the EFL Cup. BBC Sport reported that Xabi Alonso’s side were booed at halftime after a disjointed opening period, but six second-half goals turned the tie decisively in Chelsea’s favor.

Both managers made extensive changes to their teams. Alonso altered nine places in Chelsea’s starting lineup, while Leeds coach Daniel Farke made eight changes. Leeds settled more quickly and took the lead through defender Tarik Muharemovic before Brenden Aaronson doubled the visitors’ advantage shortly after the interval.

Alonso responded by making four substitutions at halftime, introducing Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James. The changes shifted the game. Palmer scored twice, Neto also found the net, and Rogers helped create four goals from open play during Chelsea’s comeback.

Danny Welbeck scored twice after starting the match, while Valentin Barco added Chelsea’s fifth goal. Barco had also been partly responsible for Leeds’ second goal during a first half in which Chelsea repeatedly lost possession. The hosts ultimately scored six times after the break, although Leeds added a third goal of their own before the final whistle.

The changes also meant early exits for young attackers Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens. Reggie Watson, making his Chelsea debut at 16, was withdrawn at halftime after receiving a booking. Geovany Quenda, who joined Chelsea from Sporting, remained on the bench and did not add to his single substitute appearance for the club.

After the match, Alonso accepted responsibility for making the game difficult for his players and said he needed to make better decisions to help them perform at their best. According to BBC Sport, Chelsea have now conceded at least twice in four of Alonso’s first five matches in charge. The victory nevertheless keeps Chelsea in contention for the cup and guarantees another competitive fixture for a 27-player squad that is not involved in European football this season.
