Chelsea and Everton Deals Collapse in Monaco Deadline-Day Chain Reaction

Chelsea and Everton both missed out on Monaco players after a connected series of deadline-day negotiations ended without either transfer being completed. BBC Sport reported that Chelsea's proposed signing of midfielder Lamine Camara depended on Monaco finalising the sale of striker Folarin Balogun to Everton.

Camara, a 22-year-old Senegal international, had emerged as a Chelsea target as the London club prepared to sell Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125 million. Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro said Chelsea made contact at about 16:00 BST after talks during the previous 10 days, but Monaco initially maintained that Camara would not leave for the amount offered. Chelsea also made an enquiry for Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

Monaco had meanwhile allowed Balogun, a 25-year-old United States international, to travel to Merseyside for a proposed £40 million Everton move. BBC Sport reported that concerns arising from Balogun's medical disrupted that transaction. With the Everton deal in doubt, Monaco reopened negotiations with Chelsea at around 20:00 BST at the £47 million price Chelsea had previously proposed for Camara.

Chelsea then completed the necessary paperwork for Camara, who had spoken with manager Xabi Alonso, passed a medical and signed a contract running until 2033, according to the BBC report. Scuro said Everton subsequently indicated at about 22:00 BST that it was ready to proceed with Balogun, prompting Monaco to halt Camara's transfer. Chelsea were reported to be angered by how that decision was communicated.

Everton submitted a deal sheet shortly before the 23:00 BST deadline to secure more time for the Balogun transaction. The move still did not happen. BBC Sport reported that Balogun changed his mind in the early hours and left Everton's Finch Farm training ground without signing. Scuro said the player believed he had been mistreated during the process, while Everton disputed that account.

The failed moves left Camara and Balogun at Monaco. Scuro said both players would be welcomed back and expected Camara to return fully committed for Monaco's upcoming away match against Paris St-Germain. He also indicated that Monaco could consider sales to clubs in countries where the transfer window remains open. The club had been seeking 150 million euros in summer player sales to support compliance with UEFA financial rules and had raised 106 million euros, according to BBC Sport.
