Chelsea agree Honest Ahanor deal as defender joins Crystal Palace for season
Chelsea have agreed a deal worth up to £40 million for Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, who will spend the 2026-27 season with Crystal Palace. The 18-year-old is scheduled to become a Chelsea player next summer.

Chelsea have agreed to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor in a deal worth up to £40 million, with the teenager set to spend the 2026-27 campaign at Crystal Palace before moving to Stamford Bridge. BBC Sport reported that all parties agreed on the arrangement, under which Ahanor remains an Atalanta player during his season at Palace and officially joins Chelsea next summer.

Crystal Palace have confirmed Ahanor's arrival for the current season. The 18-year-old said through Palace's official website that he was happy to join the club and excited by its record of providing opportunities to young players. His presentation by Palace came on the same day Chelsea announced the agreement for his future transfer.

Ahanor primarily plays at left-back. He joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer on a three-year contract, in a move BBC Sport said was reported at 16 million euros plus a further 4 million euros in add-ons. He made 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta last season and established himself as a regular starter.

The defender also made his Champions League debut in Atalanta's 2-1 victory over Club Brugge last September. In May, Italy called him into the squad for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece. Chelsea's interest developed after the London club signed right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta in July, according to the BBC report.

The structure is significant because Premier League rules permit only one player to be loaned between two clubs in the division. Chelsea have already sent Axel Disasi directly to Palace for a £3 million loan fee. Ahanor is instead being loaned to Palace by Atalanta, with Chelsea's purchase scheduled for 2027, allowing both moves to proceed within the rule as reported.

The agreement follows another recent piece of business between the London clubs: Chelsea signed centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Palace for £52 million last month. Separately, Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has joined RB Leipzig in a deal worth £14.6 million including add-ons. Guiu made 29 first-team appearances and scored eight goals after arriving from Barcelona in July 2024.
