Charlton Go Top as Southampton Hit Five Against Millwall

Charlton moved to the top of the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Preston, preserving the division's only 100% record after three matches. The Guardian reported that Karlan Grant scored the decisive goal, his first for Charlton since returning to the club on a free transfer from West Brom.

The result gave Charlton nine points from nine and marked the first time since the 1992-93 season that the club had won its opening three matches in England's second tier. Manager Nathan Jones played down any early promotion discussion, stressing that only three games had been completed and that the team would quickly turn its attention to a midweek meeting with West Brom.

Millwall began the day with a perfect record of their own and took an early lead at Southampton through Mark Sykes. Southampton responded emphatically, winning 5-1 through two goals from Cyle Larin and further strikes by Finn Azaz, Leo Scienza and Tom Fellows. The victory also enabled Southampton to erase the effect of their four-point deduction.

Elsewhere, Wolves remained unbeaten and climbed to second place after coming from behind to defeat Stoke 4-1 at Molineux. Sam Gallagher put Stoke ahead in the second minute, but Rodrigo Gomes scored twice in three minutes before half-time. Raul Jimenez converted a penalty after the interval, and Jordan James completed the scoring on his home debut.

Swansea also continued an unbeaten start with a 3-0 victory at Derby. Joseph Opoku, Eom Ji-sung and Ronald scored as Swansea reached seven points from a possible nine, leaving Derby still searching for a first league win. Middlesbrough beat West Brom 3-1, with Will Lankshear scoring twice before Alfie Jones added a late third. Lankshear has now scored six goals in five games since his summer move from Tottenham.

Norwich recorded its first league victory of the season by beating Burnley 4-1 at home. Mo Toure and Andre Brooks each scored twice after Norwich struck two goals in the opening five minutes. Josh Laurent scored Burnley's consolation before being sent off for a second booking. The results left Charlton alone at the summit, although Jones's comments reflected the limited conclusions that can be drawn from the opening three rounds.
