Charlton Take Championship Lead as Southampton Hit Five

Charlton moved to the top of the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Preston on Saturday, leaving the Addicks as the division's only team with a perfect record after three matches. Press Association reporting carried by The Guardian said Karlan Grant scored the decisive goal, his first for Charlton since returning to the club on a free transfer from West Brom.

The result gave Charlton three wins from their opening three second-tier fixtures for the first time since the 1992-93 season. Preston, by contrast, remained among the struggling sides after failing to take anything from the match.

Millwall began the day with a 100% league record and went ahead early at Southampton through Mark Sykes, but the hosts responded emphatically to win 5-1. Cyle Larin scored twice, while Finn Azaz added a tap-in, Leo Scienza converted a penalty and Tom Fellows registered his first Southampton goal. The victory also meant Southampton had erased the effect of their four-point deduction.

Wolves climbed to second by recovering from Sam Gallagher's second-minute opener to beat Stoke 4-1 at Molineux. Rodrigo Gomes scored twice in three first-half minutes to reverse the deficit. Raul Jimenez converted a 55th-minute penalty, and substitute Jordan James completed the scoring on his home debut with six minutes remaining. Wolves stayed unbeaten through their first three league games.

Swansea also retained an unbeaten record with a 3-0 victory at Derby. Joseph Opoku, Eom Ji-sung and Ronald scored for the visitors, who joined Wolves on seven points but sat third on goal difference. QPR reached seven points too after overturning Ryoya Morishita's goal to win 2-1 at Blackburn, with Paul Smyth equalising before Jimmy Dunne headed the winner.

Middlesbrough continued their strong opening with a 3-1 home success against West Brom as Will Lankshear scored twice, taking his total to six goals in five games since moving from Tottenham. Elsewhere, Norwich earned their first league victory by beating Burnley 4-1, and Ben House's goal gave Lincoln a 1-0 win at Bolton, their first victory in England's second tier since April 1961. Cardiff and Sheffield United remained winless after drawing 2-2.
