Charlton stun West Ham 2-1 after late Castellanos penalty miss
Charlton Athletic beat West Ham United 2-1 at London Stadium on Saturday, handing the relegated Hammers a defeat in their first home Championship match of the season. Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell scored for Charlton before Taty Castellanos missed a stoppage-time penalty that could have rescued a point for West Ham.
Watch the highlights:
Jones opened the scoring in the seventh minute after West Ham failed to deal with a long throw into their penalty area. The ball was allowed to bounce, and the Charlton defender took advantage to put the visitors ahead. Campbell doubled the lead after halftime when West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was dispossessed close to his own penalty area.
West Ham reduced the deficit but could not complete a comeback. Castellanos was given a late opportunity from the penalty spot in added time, only to miss. The result followed West Ham’s opening-round draw at Burnley, where they had surrendered a 2-0 advantage. They have collected one point from their first two league matches since relegation from the Premier League in May.
BBC Sport reported that West Ham had more than 77% of possession and recorded 2.96 expected goals, compared with Charlton’s 0.57. Despite those figures, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his team had not been accurate enough in either penalty area. He also acknowledged that West Ham needed to defend better after conceding from a throw-in and a turnover near their own box.
Nuno said the players had let down the 62,000 supporters in attendance. He rejected the suggestion that the large London Stadium crowd could work in favor of visiting teams, saying the backing was intended to help West Ham and that his side had failed to deliver the victory the fans deserved. He added that the team would continue working on combinations and one-on-one situations in the final third.
The defeat increases the pressure on a West Ham side expected to compete for an immediate return to the top flight. Their next match is a Carabao Cup tie against Southampton on Tuesday. Championship fixtures against Watford and Wolves follow, with both of those opponents unbeaten at the time of the BBC report.
