Charlton Stay Perfect as Southampton Put Five Past Millwall

Charlton Athletic moved to the top of the Championship after Karlan Grant secured a 1-0 victory over Preston North End, extending the London club's perfect opening to the league season. The Guardian reported that Grant's winner was his first goal for Charlton since returning on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion.

The result left Charlton as the division's only team with a 100 percent record after three matches. It also marked the first time since the 1992-93 campaign that the club has won its opening three games in England's second tier. Preston, by contrast, remained without the start they wanted as the decisive goal separated the sides.

Millwall began the day with a perfect league record of their own and took an early lead at Southampton through Mark Sykes. The advantage did not last. Southampton responded with five goals, as Cyle Larin scored twice and Finn Azaz added a tap-in before Leo Scienza converted a penalty. Tom Fellows completed the scoring with his first goal for Southampton.

That 5-1 win also erased Southampton's four-point deduction connected to the Spygate case, according to The Guardian's roundup. The scale of the recovery was notable because Millwall arrived with maximum points and then struck first, only for Southampton to take control and turn the match into a convincing home victory.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Wolves maintained their unbeaten league start by recovering from Sam Gallagher's second-minute goal to beat Stoke City 4-1. Rodrigo Gomes scored twice in three first-half minutes to reverse the score, Raul Jimenez added a penalty after the break and home debutant Jordan James supplied the fourth late on. Swansea City also stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 win at Derby County through goals from Joseph Opoku, Eom Ji-sung and Ronald.

Queens Park Rangers joined Swansea on seven points after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Ryoya Morishita put Blackburn ahead, but Paul Smyth answered within two minutes and Jimmy Dunne headed the winner. Middlesbrough continued their strong start with a 3-1 home victory over West Brom, while West Ham remained winless following a 1-1 draw at Watford.
