Charlie Tear's 89 helps Sussex reach 393 against Surrey

Charlie Tear made 89 to anchor Sussex's first innings of 393 against Surrey in the County Championship, according to BBC Sport's report from Hove. After the previous day's play was washed out, Sussex won the toss and built a competitive total as batters largely controlled the available play.

Tear occupied the crease for four hours and struck four boundaries. The 22-year-old shared a 99-run third-wicket partnership with Oli Carter across 23 overs, then added 79 with John Simpson for the fifth wicket in 20 overs. Sussex reached 270-4 before Surrey leg-spinner Rahul Chahar led a recovery for the visitors.

Chahar removed Tear when an attempted drive outside off stump produced an edge to backward point. He then bowled Jack Leaning with a googly and later trapped Jack Carson after returning with the new ball. Chahar and fellow spinner Mahipal Lomror finished with three wickets each, combining for figures of 6-171 from 59 of the day's 104 overs.

Surrey took four wickets for 51 runs during their fightback, but Sussex's lower order added valuable resistance. Ari Karvelas and Sean Hunt put on 65 for the ninth wicket before Lomror dismissed Karvelas lbw. The innings concluded from the final delivery of the day when Jaydev Unadkat was stumped.

Sussex had reshaped their top order because of injuries to Tom Clark and Dan Hughes. George Thomas made his County Championship debut and scored most of his runs in boundaries before Dan Worrall found his outside edge and Dom Sibley completed a low catch at slip. Matthew Fisher also struck after changing ends, dismissing Tom Haines and later taking a return catch from Carter's straight drive.

Simpson supplied further momentum and passed 50 for the fifth time this season before Worrall bowled him with the new ball. The BBC reported that Sussex ended the day in the stronger position, although the washout had reduced the prospects of either side securing a victory that would ease their remaining relegation concerns.
