Charlie Harmison signs Durham deal as three academy players earn rookie contracts
Charlie Harmison has signed a two-year Durham contract, joining Robbie Bowman and Luke Symington in the club’s latest rookie intake. The deals follow a season in which all three represented England Under-19s.

Charlie Harmison has signed a two-year contract with Durham, BBC Sport reported on Friday, as the county announced rookie agreements for three academy players. Wicketkeeper-batter Robbie Bowman and top-order batter Luke Symington have also secured deals, with Durham confirming that all three contracts run at least through the 2027 season.

Harmison, 18, is a fast bowler whose father Steve helped England win the 2005 Ashes. BBC Sport noted that Steve made 63 Test appearances between 2002 and 2009, giving the new signing a family connection both to the county and to one of England’s best-known international teams.

The younger Harmison is the fourth son of a member of that Ashes-winning side to sign professional terms with a County Championship club, according to the BBC. Archie Vaughan plays for Somerset, while Andrew Flintoff’s sons Rocky and Corey are with Lancashire and Kent respectively. England’s 2005 victory ended an 18-year wait to regain the urn.

Durham’s announcement outlined Harmison’s own progress: the Ashington-born right-arm bowler came through Northumberland’s age-group teams before receiving an academy contract in 2025. He made his England Under-19 debut against South Africa in May and has played four times for Durham’s second XI. The club said all three new rookies represented England Under-19s this season.

Bowman, 19, made his Durham List A debut in 2025 and is extending an earlier short-term rookie arrangement. Durham credited him with 1,407 runs across its Under-18 side and Burnmoor this summer, including 180 against Leicestershire. He also scored 122 for the England Young Lions Invitational team, adding another substantial innings to his season.

Symington, 18, recorded 925 runs for Durham Under-18s and Hartlepool, according to the club. His 11 second-XI appearances included an unbeaten 93. He also captained the Young Lions Invitational side against England and South Africa, making 52 from 38 balls in the opening match against England.

The agreements come after Durham won Division Two and secured promotion, BBC Sport reported. Steve Harmison was part of Durham’s championship-winning teams in 2008 and 2009 before retiring in 2013; his son now begins his professional career with the same county.
