Charles brothers lead Northern Ireland to historic Nations League win in Georgia

Northern Ireland earned their first away victory in the Nations League as Shea Charles scored in the 99th minute to beat Georgia 1-0 in Tbilisi on Friday. BBC Sport reported that his brother, goalkeeper Pierce Charles, had earlier denied Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from the penalty spot to keep the visitors level.

The late goal settled Northern Ireland’s opening match in League B Group 2, marking their return to the competition’s second tier after six years. According to BBC Sport, it was also the latest goal Northern Ireland have scored. Around 60 travelling supporters were there to see the breakthrough after a demanding second half.

Pierce received the player-of-the-match award after making several important saves. The 21-year-old credited preparation before the match for his penalty stop, while Shea praised his brother’s contribution to the victory. Manager Michael O’Neill also highlighted the goalkeeper’s distribution and the security his passing offered the defence, alongside Shea’s physical influence in midfield.

O’Neill’s satisfaction with the result was accompanied by criticism of the officiating, BBC Sport NI reported separately. Georgia’s penalty followed a VAR review in the 65th minute, with Daniel Ballard judged to have fouled Luka Lochoshvili while contesting a cross. Northern Ireland later had their own penalty appeal turned down following an incident involving Shea Charles in the 88th minute.

The manager also disputed the decision not to award a foul when substitute Ceadach O’Neill went down late in the game. Ballard was injured during the subsequent Georgian attack as he chased a loose ball. O’Neill linked the defender’s injury to that passage of play, while praising the resilience his players had shown against the hosts after the interval.

Ballard’s availability was the immediate concern after the win. O’Neill said the Sunderland defender had suffered a hamstring injury and would miss the remaining three matches of the international window, against Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia. He said a scan was planned for Saturday; the report did not establish a longer-term recovery timetable beyond those international absences.
