Champions League scoring average reaches 4.16 after 40-goal Tuesday
The Champions League's scoring rate has reached 4.16 goals per game this season after another 40 goals were scored across Tuesday's nine fixtures. According to BBC Sport, the running average is the highest in the competition's history, with 187 goals scored so far. The figure is a snapshot of the campaign to date, rather than a completed-season record.
Watch the highlights:
The latest round followed an even higher-scoring set of matches last week. Matchday two produced 78 goals across Tuesday and Wednesday, which BBC Sport reported was a record total for a matchday. That exceeded the 69 goals scored on the opening matchday of this season by nine, maintaining the high scoring levels seen at the start of the campaign.
Last Wednesday alone accounted for 46 goals. The BBC identified it as the third-highest daily total in Champions League history, behind only the final league-phase matchdays in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Both of those dates featured 18 matches, providing an important distinction when comparing the number of goals scored on different days of the competition.
The current scoring average also stands out when the earlier European Cup era is included. BBC Sport's figures place this season third on that broader historical measure, behind 4.19 goals per game in 1959-60 and 4.38 in 1955-56. This season's Champions League rate is therefore below those two European Cup campaigns despite leading the Champions League-era comparison.
Tuesday's results included Manchester City's 5-1 victory over AEK Athens, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick. The night's overall tally of 40 leaves the current matchday still short of last week's 78-goal total, with Wednesday's matches yet to be played. Whether that record is surpassed remains unresolved; Tuesday's scoring alone does not establish a new matchday high.
The numbers come in the third season of the competition's revised league phase, introduced in 2024-25. It features 36 clubs, each playing eight matches, instead of the previous 32-team group stage in which each club played six. The top eight advance directly to the knockout stage, while teams finishing ninth through 24th contest two-legged play-offs.
