Eagles confirm Jalen Hurts blood clot diagnosis, with no return date set
The Eagles and agent Nicole Lynn say Jalen Hurts is stable and expected to recover fully. He cannot participate in contact football while taking blood thinners.

Jalen Hurts will be unable to take part in contact football while receiving treatment for blood clots, the Philadelphia Eagles and his agent, Nicole Lynn, announced on Monday. Their joint statement confirmed a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli following further medical examinations.

The Eagles said Hurts was stable, with no significant restrictions on his normal functioning, and that treatment was expected to consist of blood thinners. The team and Lynn expect him to recover fully without lasting effects. He can remain involved with the team and continue conditioning, but contact activities are prohibited during treatment.

Monday's announcement followed an earlier account from the Eagles explaining how the condition was discovered. According to the team's October 15 statement, Hurts first sought treatment for his calf after practice on October 8. He told medical staff he had been struck by a cleat during the October 4 game against the Rams, and he had participated fully in practice before that treatment session.

An ultrasound performed after the team's arrival in London and its Saturday walkthrough detected a superficial clot. The Eagles said their medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the findings and considered it safe for Hurts to play. They also recommended another ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the flight back to Philadelphia.

The team said Hurts played without restrictions, received treatment on the following two days and completed Wednesday's practice. A further ultrasound that Wednesday night showed that the clot had moved. Philadelphia then ruled him out of the Carolina game while determining treatment, before placing him on injured reserve on October 17.

That roster move left Tanner McKee to take over at quarterback against the Panthers. In announcing Hurts' placement on injured reserve, the Eagles also confirmed that running back Jaydon Blue had been promoted from the practice squad, filling the vacancy on the active roster.

Monday's medical update did not specify a return date. The Eagles and Lynn said they anticipated Hurts could resume contact football once he was no longer taking blood thinners. For now, that treatment requirement remains the stated condition governing his return to contact activity.
