Hooper winner gives Celtic Tennent's Sixes title after 5-4 Rangers comeback
Celtic won the revived Tennent's Sixes on Sunday, October 4, beating Rangers 5-4 in the final at Braehead Arena. Gary Hooper scored the decisive goal as Celtic twice overturned two-goal deficits, according to the club's match report. The victory completed a turnaround from their heavy defeat against the same opponents a day earlier.
Watch the highlights:
The two-day competition brought together former players representing all 12 SPFL Premiership clubs. Celtic's team was managed by Tom Boyd and Simon Donnelly, with a squad including Aiden McGeady, Charlie Mulgrew, Joe Ledley, Jonny Hayes and Hooper. It was the tournament's first staging for 33 years, bringing the indoor event back after its long absence.
Celtic began with a 5-2 victory over Kilmarnock before losing 7-1 to Rangers on Saturday. Their route through Sunday was much more convincing: they beat St Mirren 4-0, then defeated Falkirk 6-3 in the quarter-finals and St Johnstone 6-1 in the semi-finals. Those results earned them another meeting with Rangers, this time with the trophy at stake.
BBC Sport Scotland reported that Martyn Waghorn had scored five times in Rangers' earlier derby victory, with Barry Ferguson leading the side. The final produced a very different outcome. Hooper's winner was also the first time Rangers had been behind at any stage during the tournament, making the decisive moment their only spell trailing across the entire weekend.
The revival also brought back a distinctive penalty format. Rather than taking a conventional spot-kick, players started from the halfway line and had 10 seconds to attempt to score. BBC Sport Scotland reported only one red card during the weekend, shown to St Johnstone's Frazer Wright for a challenge on Dundee United's Morgaro Gomis.
Braehead's football surface was installed over the ice rink normally used by Glasgow Clan, giving the six-a-side event an unusual setting. Celtic's success also ended Partick Thistle's long tenure as the competition's most recent winners: they had held that status since the previous tournament in 1993. The returning competition therefore finished with a new champion after its three-decade gap.
