Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Dubai Championships Due to Elbow Injury Concerns
The 24-time Grand Slam champion opts for caution ahead of the clay court season, pulling out of next week's ATP 500 event in the UAE.

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from next week's Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, citing ongoing concerns about his right elbow that have persisted since his Australian Open campaign last month. The Serbian legend's decision represents a cautious approach to his 2026 season as he prioritizes long-term fitness over immediate competition.

The 38-year-old's withdrawal comes as a significant blow to tournament organizers, who had heavily promoted his participation in the ATP 500 event. Djokovic was set to be the top seed and was expected to be a major draw for tennis fans in the Middle East, where he has enjoyed considerable success throughout his career, winning the Dubai title five times previously.

In a statement released through his management team, Djokovic explained his decision: "After careful consideration with my medical team, we've decided that it's best for me to take additional time to fully recover from the elbow discomfort I've been managing. While I'm disappointed to miss Dubai, where I've had so many wonderful memories, my focus must be on being 100% ready for the upcoming clay court season."

The injury concerns first surfaced during Djokovic's quarter-final loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the Australian Open, where he was visibly hampered during the later stages of the match. Despite playing through the discomfort in Melbourne, subsequent medical evaluations revealed inflammation that requires additional rest and treatment to prevent potential long-term complications.

Tournament director Salah Tahlak expressed understanding for Djokovic's decision while acknowledging the disappointment: "We completely support Novak's choice to prioritize his health. His welfare is paramount, and we look forward to welcoming him back to Dubai when he's fully fit. The tournament will still feature incredible tennis with many of the world's best players competing."

Djokovic's absence opens up the draw considerably, with defending champion Daniil Medvedev now expected to be elevated to the top seed. The withdrawal also provides additional opportunities for rising stars to make their mark on one of the tour's premier hard court events. With the French Open still three months away, Djokovic's team remains optimistic that the extended rest will ensure he's in peak condition for his pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
