Manchester City Stunned by Brighton in Premier League Upset
Brighton and Hove Albion pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Premier League season on Monday night, defeating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to a dramatic late winner from striker Evan Ferguson. The result sends shockwaves through the title race and highlights the unpredictable nature of English football.
The Irish striker, who has been Brighton most consistent performer this season, struck in the 88th minute after a perfectly weighted through ball from Japanese midfielder Kaoru Mitoma. Ferguson composed himself brilliantly before slotting the ball past Ederson, sending the traveling Brighton supporters into raptures and leaving the home crowd stunned.
Manchester City had taken the lead through Erling Haaland in the 23rd minute, with the Norwegian striker continuing his prolific form by converting a precise cross from Kevin De Bruyne. The goal appeared to set City on course for another routine home victory, but Brighton had other plans.
The equalizer came against the run of play in the 61st minute when Pascal Gross capitalized on a rare defensive lapse from City. The German midfielder pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area after a corner kick was not properly cleared, firing low into the bottom corner to level the match.
Pep Guardiolas side dominated possession with 71 percent of the ball and registered 18 shots to Brighton 8, but they were unable to find the crucial second goal that would have secured the three points. City struck the woodwork twice in the second half through attempts from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva.
The defeat represents a significant blow to Manchester City championship aspirations, as they now trail league leaders Arsenal by seven points with just 14 matches remaining in the season. Brighton meanwhile climb to 10th place in the table and continue their impressive campaign under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
For Ferguson, the goal was his 14th of the season and arguably his most important, as it demonstrated the 22-year-old ability to perform on the biggest stages against the highest quality opposition. His development continues to be one of the most encouraging stories in European football.
