Cavan Sullivan sets US scoring record in 3-0 victory over Mexico
Cavan Sullivan became the youngest goalscorer in United States men's national-team history as the Americans defeated Mexico 3-0 at State Farm Stadium on Saturday, according to The Guardian's match report. The teenager, who had turned 17 only days earlier, scored between goals from Julian Hall and Malik Tillman as the US overcame a difficult opening spell to beat opponents who finished with 10 players.
Watch the highlights:
Mexico initially made it hard for the US defenders to build attacks, pressing closely and spending much of the early play in the American half. The hosts responded by using short goal-kick routines involving Auston Trusty and goalkeeper Diego Kochen. That adjustment helped interrupt Mexico's pressure, although the Americans still struggled to create much going forward before Hall put them ahead.
The opening goal developed after Sebastian Berhalter found Alex Freeman on the right. Freeman slipped a pass through to Gio Reyna inside the penalty area, and Reyna's low delivery caused problems for goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. The loose ball reached Hall, who finished first time. It was the 18-year-old striker's third goal in his first three US appearances. Mexico had an opportunity to level before the interval, but Santiago Giménez missed after Kochen spilled an effort from Luís Romo.
Sullivan extended the lead after the hour when Rangel, positioned well away from his goal, misplaced a pass intended for Diego Campillo. Sullivan intercepted, controlled the ball and lifted a left-footed shot over the goalkeeper and beneath the crossbar. The Guardian's Jeff Rueter reported that the finish was Sullivan's first international goal, making the record-breaking moment part of a decisive contribution against Mexico.
The visitors' task became harder in the 67th minute when substitute Mateo Chavez was sent off for a challenge on Yunus Musah. The incident prompted a confrontation between players, with referee Selvin Brown showing Chavez a red card. Mexico were left a player short while already trailing by two goals.
Tillman completed the scoring in the 85th minute following another defensive mistake. An Álvaro Fidalgo backpass ran into the penalty area without Rangel or a defender collecting it, allowing Tillman to reach the ball and finish into the upper corner. His goal secured the three-goal margin after Hall and Sullivan had punished earlier errors.
