Casemiro and Sesko Strike as Manchester United Close In on Champions League Return
Goals from Brazilian midfielder Casemiro and Slovak striker Benjamin Sesko powered Manchester United to a crucial 2-0 victory at Brentford, lifting Erik ten Hag's side to within striking distance of a top-five finish that would guarantee Champions League football next season.
Watch the highlights:
The result at the Gtech Community Stadium moves United to within three points of fifth-placed Chelsea, with a game in hand, setting up a thrilling run-in that will decide which English clubs compete in Europe's premier competition.
Casemiro opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a powerful header from Bruno Fernandes' corner, marking his first goal since February. The 32-year-old, who has been criticized for inconsistent performances this campaign, celebrated passionately in front of the away support.
"Casemiro showed why he's still a top player today," manager Erik ten Hag said. "His experience in these situations is invaluable. He leads by example."
Sesko doubled United's advantage in the 67th minute with a clinical finish after a devastating counter-attack orchestrated by the influential Fernandes. The 21-year-old striker now has 12 goals in all competitions this season.
Brentford, missing key forward Bryan Mbeumo through injury, offered little threat and have now won just two of their last eight Premier League matches. Their European hopes are all but extinguished.
"We controlled the game well," Fernandes explained. "The defensive work was excellent. Now we focus on Thursday [against AFC Bournemouth]."
