Carrier scores late winner as Hurricanes beat Islanders 5-3
William Carrier broke a third-period tie before Jalen Chatfield sealed Carolina's victory. The Islanders twice fought back but finished without a goal from four power plays.

William Carrier scored with 5:08 remaining as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 at UBS Arena on Thursday. According to amNewYork's match report, the Islanders had recovered from two separate deficits before Carrier's rebound finish settled the contest in Carolina's favour.

Watch the highlights:

The Hurricanes established an early advantage through Logan Stankoven and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Cardiac Cane reported that Stankoven struck after 57 seconds following work by Jackson Blake, before Kotkaniemi redirected a Jordan Martinook pass to double the lead. Carolina reached the first intermission two goals ahead, having scored on two opportunities early in the opening period.

New York responded through Mitchell Chaffee, who redirected Matthew Schaefer's shot, and Brayden Schenn, who scored on a wraparound. Andrei Svechnikov restored Carolina's advantage a minute after Schenn's equaliser, ending a nine-game scoring drought, according to Cardiac Cane. Victor Eklund then brought the Islanders level again late in the second period, leaving the teams tied 3-3 entering the third.

Carrier provided the decisive finish after Semyon Varlamov stopped a Svechnikov shot. Jalen Chatfield subsequently scored into an empty net to remove the possibility of another Islanders recovery. Cardiac Cane reported that Carrier and Svechnikov each finished with a goal and an assist, while Sebastian Aho contributed two assists as Carolina responded to Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at Nashville.

Varlamov made 34 saves for New York, which outscored Carolina 3-1 in the second period but could not carry that recovery through to the result. The Islanders won 40 faceoffs to Carolina's 21 and registered 26 hits, amNewYork reported. Those advantages did not produce a breakthrough on the power play, where New York finished without a goal in four chances.

The defeat extended the Islanders' run without a regulation victory to six games. Speaking to amNewYork, captain Bo Horvat pointed to costly lapses despite other positive parts of the performance. Schenn identified faster puck movement and better execution as areas requiring improvement, with the Islanders unable to turn either of their comebacks into a lead.
