Carrick Says Manchester United Rebuild Needs More Than One Window

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has cautioned that the club's rebuilding work will take longer than a single transfer window, even after a summer focused heavily on central midfield. The Guardian, with reporting from Will Unwin, said Carrick was broadly satisfied with the business completed but did not regard it as an instant solution to the team's wider challenge of returning to the top.

United spent £155 million on three central midfielders: Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba. The club also signed goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer to serve as a backup. Those additions reshaped the middle of the squad, which Carrick identified as an area requiring reinforcement after last season.

The window nevertheless closed with a clear gap at left-back. According to The Guardian, United made inquiries about players in that position during the final week but completed no further signing. Luke Shaw is consequently the only senior specialist left-back in the squad, although Carrick said the group includes flexible players who can operate in different roles.

United also chose not to sanction a deadline-day loan for Joshua Zirkzee after Everton made an approach. The club concluded that the inquiry came too late to find a replacement striker. Carrick's assessment was that United had emerged stronger overall, while acknowledging that a squad is rarely perfect and must continue to evolve.

The immediate competitive picture gives that assessment added weight. United travel to Everton on Sunday still looking for their first away point of the Premier League season after losing at Hull. They then begin their Champions League campaign on Thursday, placing further demands on a squad whose depth is already under scrutiny.

Carrick said financial circumstances shaped what United could do, but expressed satisfaction with the quality of the players who arrived and with the balance inside the group. His position is that improvement must extend beyond individual recruits to the squad as a whole. The summer spending has supplied significant midfield options; the coming domestic and European fixtures will show how well United can cover the positions they were unable to strengthen.
