Carrick Defends Manchester United Leaders After Opening Defeat

According to The Guardian, the 22-year-old has an ankle injury that could keep him out for at least three weeks. The Cameroon international joined from Brighton on Tuesday in a deal reported at £70 million.

Carrick said United had admired Baleba since last summer and had remained patient while trying to complete the transfer. He described the midfielder as a player suited to the group and capable of helping the club move forward. If the reported recovery timetable holds, Baleba may have to wait until after the international break for his debut, with Tottenham due to visit on October 10.
