Carrick cautions Manchester United rebuild has no instant fix

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has cautioned that the club cannot expect an immediate transformation from a single transfer window, even after a major investment in central midfield. The Guardian reported that United spent £155 million on three players in that area but did not recruit a left-back before the deadline.

Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba joined to reinforce Carrick’s midfield, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow arrived on a free transfer as a backup. United made no additions during the final week of the window despite inquiries about left-backs, leaving Luke Shaw as the only senior player in that position, according to the report.

Carrick said he was largely satisfied with the business completed and stressed that rebuilding involves more than changing individual players. He described improvement as a gradual process across the group and squad, with United’s ultimate ambition still to return to the top. He also pointed to the flexibility of players already available to him.

The manager acknowledged financial constraints while saying the club had entered the window determined to emerge stronger. He expressed confidence in the quality of the arrivals and in the balance and dynamic of the squad, while accepting that there will always be other moves a club might have made.

United also retained Joshua Zirkzee after Everton asked about a deadline-day loan. The Guardian reported that United considered the approach too late because there was insufficient time to find another striker. That decision preserved Carrick’s attacking depth ahead of a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.

Carrick’s side travel to Everton on Sunday still looking for their first away point after losing at promoted Hull. Their Champions League campaign then begins on Thursday, placing an early test on the depth Carrick defended. The midfield has been substantially reshaped, but the unresolved left-back shortage and quick turnaround between competitions will provide an immediate measure of how effectively the squad can adapt.
