Carrick calls for swift resolution of Manchester City financial case
Michael Carrick says the Manchester City case has affected him personally and wants clarity. City have appealed the commission's findings, with sanctions still unresolved.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has called for a swift conclusion to Manchester City's financial disciplinary case, saying it has affected him personally. Speaking on Friday, he declined to take a position on whether past titles should be reassigned while the proceedings remain unresolved, according to BBC Sport.

Watch the highlights:

Carrick's connection to the dispute spans his playing and coaching careers. He was in United's team at Sunderland when Sergio Aguero's late goal secured City's 2012 Premier League title. He also belonged to United's squad when City finished ahead of them in 2018, and was on the coaching staff for United's second-place finish in 2020-21.

The BBC reported that Carrick said a medal awarded retrospectively could not recreate the experience of winning at the time. He described the pursuit of a trophy and its decisive moment as central to the achievement. He said questions remained unanswered and stressed the need for those involved to know what happens next.

The Premier League announced on September 29 that an independent commission had upheld all charges concerning serious financial-rule breaches over the nine seasons from 2009-10 to 2017-18. According to the league's account of the findings, arrangements with commercial partners overstated revenue and understated costs, while the club's accounts failed to show its true financial position. The commission also upheld three of four alleged breaches concerning cooperation with the investigation.

City confirmed that they lodged an appeal on October 1. In their statement, the club maintained their innocence and argued that the commission's conclusions contained material errors involving law, principle and facts. Those remain City's grounds for challenging the decision, rather than findings that overturn it. The appeal means the dispute is continuing despite publication of the commission's conclusions.

Punishment is a separate stage of the process. The Premier League said sanctions would be considered at a further private hearing, with publication governed by its rules. Its statement identified fines, points deductions and other sporting penalties among the commission's available powers, without announcing a punishment. Carrick's intervention therefore comes before a settled outcome on the consequences for City or any question of retrospective honours.
