Carrick backs Manchester United recovery after Leeds draw
Michael Carrick said Manchester United can still recover their season after drawing 1-1 at Leeds. Daniel Farke regretted his side's failure to turn their dominance into victory.

Michael Carrick said Manchester United could still put together a successful season after a 1-1 draw at Leeds, pointing to his players' response to a difficult week rather than claiming their problems were resolved. In post-match comments reported by the Guardian, the United head coach described renewed purpose within his squad while acknowledging that another game had ended without a victory.

Watch the highlights:

United have seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches and only one league win, against Ipswich in August. The result at Leeds followed a 1-1 draw with Tottenham the previous weekend. Between those league fixtures, United lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid, adding to the disappointing results Carrick was addressing after Sunday's match.

Carrick said the players had approached their preparations with determination and taken that attitude into the game. He highlighted their commitment to one another and to representing United, and said he had spoken to them that morning about the history of the Leeds fixture and its significance for supporters. He regarded the intensity of the performance as encouragement, even without the win.

The head coach nevertheless accepted that United's league position was disappointing. His assessment was not that everything was going well, but that the team needed consistency in its work while trying to recover. Carrick said he remained confident they could win matches and assemble a stronger run of results, presenting that as a belief about what could follow rather than an achievement already secured.

On the pitch, Bryan Mbeumo gave United a first-half lead before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised after the interval. Leeds manager Daniel Farke took a different emphasis from the draw, expressing disappointment that his team had not collected all three points. He said Leeds had been the dominant side but lacked sufficient quality in the attacking areas to make their advantage count.

Farke also said Leeds had earned the expectation that they could beat United through their work over the preceding month. He welcomed that assessment of his side but stressed the need to be more clinical and efficient. Both managers therefore left with reasons for encouragement, while acknowledging different shortcomings: United had not won, and Leeds had not converted the control Farke felt they enjoyed into victory.
