Carra: Carrick will be Man Utd boss next season after sensational results

Jamie Carragher has backed Michael Carrick to become Manchester United's permanent manager next season following the club's impressive run of results that has brought them close to Champions League qualification. Former Liverpool defender Carragher, writing in his Telegraph column, described Carrick's interim management as 'sensational' and suggested the club's hierarchy should make his position permanent. United have lost just one of their last 15 Premier League matches under Carrick, who took over following Ruben Amorim's disastrous reign. The current run includes impressive victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle, with the latest being Sunday's 2-1 win over Brentford that moved them within touching distance of the top four. Carrick has transformed the squad's mentality and implemented a possession-based style that has reduced the team's reliance on counter-attacking football. Former United defender Gary Neville was equally effusive, suggesting Carrick has shown 'tactical nous and man-management skills' that mark him out as a future top manager.

The transformation has been particularly evident in the performances of Bruno Fernandes, who has been liberated by Carrick's tactical approach. The Portuguese midfielder has contributed 12 goals and 8 assists in 2026, with his pressing intensity and creative output reaching new heights. Teenage striker Sesko has also flourished, with his brace against Brentford taking his season tally to 18 Premier League goals. Carragher argues that the stability provided by a permanent appointment would allow Carrick to make longer-term squad planning decisions and secure his preferred transfer targets. United's technical director has reportedly been impressed by the dressing room atmosphere under Carrick, with senior players speaking privately about the improved training ground environment.

However, sources close to the board suggest United are still considering external candidates, with several high-profile managers available. The club's preferred timeline is to make a decision after the season concludes, with Champions League qualification still not guaranteed. Tottenham's collapse into the relegation zone has complicated the race for fourth place, with United now facing less competition for the final qualifying spot. Carrick himself has remained diplomatic, stating only that he is 'focused on the remaining games' and refusing to discuss his long-term future. Former United assistant manager Mike Phelan has praised Carrick's ability to connect with players across different age groups and nationalities, a skill that proved elusive for his predecessors.
