Carlotta Wamser earns Manchester City a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich

Manchester City recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 away to Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League, with Carlotta Wamser scoring the equaliser four minutes from the end. According to the Guardian's match report, Beth Mead began City's recovery before half-time after Giulia Gwinn's opener and a Kerstin Casparij own goal had put Bayern in control.

Bayern took the lead after 11 minutes when Linda Dallmann advanced through midfield and released Gwinn down the right. The full-back finished past City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita. Klara Bühl had already threatened with a volley that went wide and created a chance for Pernille Harder as the home side applied early pressure at Sportpark Unterhaching.

City struggled to find space in possession, and Bayern increased their advantage when Casparij turned Harder's cross into her own net. The visitors nevertheless reduced the deficit before the interval. With a blue smoke flare on the pitch, play was allowed to continue as Casparij advanced down the right, and her delivery eventually reached Mead for a close-range finish, the Guardian reported.

The second half brought City an opportunity to level from the penalty spot after Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic brought down Aoba Fujino. Mahmutovic then saved Khadija Shaw's penalty to preserve the hosts' lead. City manager Andrée Jeglertz subsequently introduced Mary Fowler in place of Shaw and brought Laura Blindkilde Brown into midfield as the visitors continued their pursuit of an equaliser.

Wamser, who joined City from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer, supplied that goal on her return to Germany. She arrived at the edge of the penalty area and struck the finish that made it 2-2. Bayern still had opportunities to recover their advantage, with substitute Edna Imade getting two late chances, but City held on to complete the comeback.

Bayern had entered the match unbeaten in their previous 15 group-stage games in the competition and had reached last season's semi-finals, according to the Guardian. City were returning to European competition after a year away and next face Real Madrid in Manchester. Their opening result came despite the absence of injured players Vivianne Miedema and Rebecca Knaak.
