Carlos Queiroz reappointed Ghana coach after World Cup exit

Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as head coach of Ghana's men's national team, returning to the role two months after appearing to announce his departure. BBC Sport reported that the Ghana Football Association decided to re-engage the 73-year-old following internal discussions, although the governing body has not disclosed the length of his new agreement.

Queiroz initially took charge of the Black Stars in April and led Ghana to the last 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Their campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat by Colombia, after which Queiroz posted a social-media message that appeared to signal the end of his tenure. The GFA has now chosen continuity for its next international cycle.

In announcing the appointment, the association pointed to Queiroz's international experience, technical background and familiarity with the Ghana squad. It said those qualities placed him in a strong position to guide the team into its next phase. The GFA added that more information about his mandate would be provided later, leaving the precise terms and targets unconfirmed.

The immediate task is qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with the qualifying campaign due to begin later in September. Ghana has been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia. At the time of the announcement, the Black Stars had not confirmed the dates or venues for their first two group fixtures.

Queiroz managed at his fifth consecutive World Cup earlier in 2026, having previously led Iran and Portugal at the tournament. He has also coached Egypt at a major competition and held senior national-team posts with South Africa, Colombia and Qatar. Earlier in his career, he served twice as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

His return therefore comes only a short time after an apparent separation and gives Ghana an experienced coach who already knows the current set-up. The appointment also resolves the immediate question over who will lead the Black Stars into Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, while the duration of Queiroz's contract and the fuller scope of his renewed role remain to be announced by the GFA.
