Cardinals Soar Past Yellowjackets in Hard-Fought 7-4 Victory
The Webb City Cardinals showcased their offensive prowess and defensive resilience Tuesday afternoon, securing a 7-4 victory over the Lebanon Yellowjackets in a thrilling matchup at Lebanon High School. The win moves Webb City to an impressive 9-3 record this season while dealing Lebanon their eighth loss in eleven games.
Webb City wasted little time establishing control, jumping to an early 3-0 advantage in the second inning. The rally began when Braden Strickland delivered a crucial RBI single to left field, bringing home Trevor Lofland for the game's first run. Lebanon's defensive miscues proved costly as the Cardinals capitalized on two errors, with Marcus Young crossing the plate on an infield mistake before Strickland scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning.
The Cardinals extended their lead in the fourth inning through aggressive baserunning and smart situational hitting. With the bases loaded, Karsen Myers took a hit-by-pitch, allowing Abel Getz to score and push Webb City's advantage to 4-0. The Cardinals appeared in command as starting pitcher Tate Lewis dominated on the mound, striking out eight batters while allowing just three hits through four innings of work.
Lebanon refused to surrender quietly, mounting a comeback attempt in the fifth inning that brought the home crowd to its feet. Beckett York ignited the rally with a towering triple to center field that scored both Malachi Simmonds and Cole Milliken, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Harrison Cranmer continued the momentum with a sharp line drive single to left, plating York and suddenly making it a one-run game at 4-3.
With tension building and Lebanon sensing an opportunity, Webb City demonstrated championship composure in the crucial seventh inning. Strickland again proved clutch in the spotlight, ripping a single to center field that brought home Mason Williams and Talan Haslip. The insurance runs proved vital when Mason Young added another score on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 7-3.
Lebanon made one final push in the bottom of the seventh when Cranmer delivered a two-out RBI single that scored Austin Gilby, but Webb City's defense held firm to preserve the three-run victory.
Strickland led the Cardinals' offensive attack, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored in his standout performance. Young contributed significantly with two RBIs on a 1-for-3 effort. Lewis earned the pitching victory after his dominant four-inning start, while York took the loss for Lebanon despite an impressive 2-for-4 showing with two RBIs and a run scored.
The victory sets up Webb City for their next challenge as they host Springfield Central High School on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., looking to continue their strong season momentum against the 0-6 opponents.
