Cardiff beat Scarlets 21-15 as driving mauls decide Welsh derby

Cardiff defeated Scarlets 21-15 in Llanelli in the first Welsh derby of the United Rugby Championship season, with their driving line-out producing all three tries. According to BBC Sport's match report, Dan Thomas, Taine Basham and replacement hooker Evan Lloyd crossed for the visitors, who recovered after losing their half-time advantage to secure victory in front of 7,073 spectators.

Scarlets opened the scoring through Joe Roberts after scrum-half Dane Blacker broke through and Sam Lousi delivered the offload that released the centre. Thomas answered from a maul, but the hosts struck again when Eddie James created space for Blair Murray to score. Cardiff responded through Basham, who was named player of the match, and Callum Sheedy's two conversions helped give them a 14-12 interval lead.

The home side moved back ahead after Gareth Anscombe, making his competitive debut for Scarlets, was replaced early in the second half by Joe Hawkins. Hawkins kicked a penalty to put Scarlets 15-14 in front. That proved to be their only score after the break, despite Murray continuing to threaten with his running and James making further ground with the ball.

Cardiff's replacements included Jarrod Evans, back at the club from Harlequins, and Wales flanker James Botham. A crucial territorial shift followed a Murray kick that was ruled out on the full after referee Adam Jones consulted the television match official. Cardiff took advantage of the resulting attacking position, with Lloyd finishing another line-out drive and Evans converting to establish a six-point lead.

Evans subsequently missed a long-range penalty that would have extended the advantage beyond a converted try. Scarlets still had an opportunity to challenge the lead when James broke forward again, but Lloyd followed his scoring contribution with a turnover that stopped the attack. The replacement hooker's interventions helped Cardiff protect the result through the closing stages.

The visitors were without injured Wales wing Josh Adams but handed debuts to summer arrivals Scott Sio and Le Roux Malan. Scarlets were missing injured back-rowers Fletcher Anderson and Taine Plumtree, along with fly-half Sam Costelow. The defeat came on Ryan Elias's 200th appearance for the hosts, while Cardiff followed last season's sixth-place finish and play-off qualification with victory in this opening Welsh derby.
