Cardiff maul proves decisive in 21-15 derby win over Scarlets

Cardiff beat Scarlets 21-15 in Llanelli in the season’s first Welsh derby in the United Rugby Championship, with their attacking line-out providing all three tries. According to BBC Sport’s match report, Dan Thomas, Taine Basham and replacement hooker Evan Lloyd scored for the visitors, who overcame a second-half deficit to secure victory in front of 7,073 spectators.

Scarlets struck first through centre Joe Roberts after scrum-half Dane Blacker broke through and Sam Lousi supplied the offload. Cardiff answered through Thomas, driven over from a maul, but the home side found another opening when Eddie James put Blair Murray into space for an individual try. Basham then crossed for Cardiff, and two Callum Sheedy conversions helped the visitors take a 14-12 advantage into half-time despite Scarlets’ two tries.

The hosts moved back ahead after the interval when Joe Hawkins, on for Gareth Anscombe, kicked a penalty. Anscombe had been making his competitive debut for Scarlets. Hawkins’ kick proved to be their only second-half score, however, as Cardiff’s replacements helped turn the contest. Jarrod Evans, back at Cardiff after his spell with Harlequins, entered alongside a group of substitutes that also included Wales flanker James Botham.

A decision over Murray’s kick gave Cardiff the attacking position for the winning try. After consulting the television match official, referee Adam Jones ruled that the ball had gone out on the full after hitting the touchline. Cardiff capitalised through Lloyd, who finished another driving line-out, and Evans added the conversion. Evans subsequently missed a long-range penalty that would have extended the lead beyond a single converted try.

Scarlets still had an opportunity to respond, with another strong carry from James giving them hope late on. Lloyd intervened again, this time with a turnover that stopped the home attack and helped preserve Cardiff’s six-point margin. Basham was named player of the match, while Lloyd’s contributions at both ends were central to the visitors closing out the result.

The derby also featured debuts for Cardiff’s summer recruits Scott Sio and Le Roux Malan, while Scarlets hooker Ryan Elias made his 200th appearance. Cardiff entered the campaign after finishing sixth last season as the only Welsh side to reach the play-offs. Scarlets had finished 14th, and their opening derby ended in defeat despite first-half tries from Roberts and Murray.
