Cardiff's line-out power secures 21-15 derby win over Scarlets

Cardiff beat Scarlets 21-15 in Llanelli on Saturday to win the first Welsh derby of the United Rugby Championship season, with their attacking line-out producing all three tries. According to BBC Sport Wales' match report, Dan Thomas, Taine Basham and replacement hooker Evan Lloyd crossed for the visitors, who overturned a second-half deficit after leading narrowly at the break.

Scarlets struck first through Joe Roberts, whose try followed a break by scrum-half Dane Blacker and an offload from Sam Lousi. Thomas replied from a driving maul, but the hosts moved ahead again when Eddie James put Blair Murray through a gap for their second try. Cardiff responded through Basham, who was named player of the match, and Callum Sheedy's two conversions helped give them a 14-12 half-time advantage.

Gareth Anscombe made his competitive Scarlets debut before being replaced early in the second half by Joe Hawkins. The replacement made an immediate contribution with a penalty that restored the home side's lead at 15-14. It proved to be Scarlets' only score after the interval, despite further attacking contributions from Murray and James as the hosts sought to build on their first-half tries.

A ruling on a Murray kick preceded the decisive Cardiff score. After referee Adam Jones consulted the television match official, the kick was judged to have gone out on the full after touching the touchline. Cardiff gained an attacking position and capitalised through Lloyd, whose try came from another driving line-out. Jarrod Evans converted to establish the six-point margin.

Evans subsequently missed a long-range penalty that would have put Cardiff more than a converted try ahead. Scarlets still had an opportunity to respond, and another break from James offered encouragement. Lloyd then intervened with a turnover to stop the home attack, adding an important defensive contribution to the try that had put his side back in front.

The match drew a crowd of 7,073 and marked Ryan Elias' 200th Scarlets appearance, although the hooker's milestone ended in defeat. Cardiff gave debuts to summer recruits Scott Sio and Le Roux Malan. They entered the new campaign after finishing sixth last season as the only Welsh team to reach the play-offs, while Scarlets had finished 14th.
