Cameron Young Claims Players Championship in Dramatic Finish Over Matt Fitzpatrick
Cameron Young captured his second PGA Tour title and biggest career victory at TPC Sawgrass, edging Matt Fitzpatrick by one shot after a thrilling final round that saw Ludvig Aberg collapse from a three-shot lead.

Cameron Young delivered a masterful performance under pressure to capture The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday, securing his second PGA Tour victory and the most significant triumph of his professional career with a dramatic one-shot victory over Matt Fitzpatrick.

Trailing the Englishman by one stroke with just two holes remaining, Young demonstrated the composure and skill that separates champions from contenders. His brilliant tee shot at the notorious par-3 17th hole landed just 9½ feet from the pin, setting up a crucial birdie that drew him level with Fitzpatrick as both players headed to the treacherous 18th hole.

Young steady par on the final hole, capped by a nerve-wracking eight-inch putt, sealed his victory at 13-under par 275 in what is considered the PGA Tour flagship event. The 28-year-old New York native closed with a 4-under 68 to claim the biggest prize of his career at one of golf most demanding venues.

The nerves kicked in over the 8-inch putt on the last. That hole looked really, really small there from pretty close range, Young admitted after completing his championship round. So happy to have finished it off, and just really excited to have played the way I did.

Fitzpatrick appeared positioned to force a playoff after his final approach shot, but his eight-and-a-half-foot par putt slid past the right edge of the cup, leaving him in second place. The former U.S. Open champion had overcome early struggles to post six birdies and two bogeys in his final round of 68.

The turning point came at the 18th tee, where Fitzpatrick drive found pine straw in the tree line to the right of the fairway, leading to the bogey that ultimately cost him the championship. I felt like I hit a good drive, and once you are out of position it is difficult to make your par, Fitzpatrick reflected on the crucial moment.

Ludvig Aberg entered the final round holding a commanding three-shot lead and maintained a two-stroke advantage through eight holes. However, the Swede championship bid dramatically unraveled on the back nine when disaster struck at the 11th and 12th holes.

Aberg suffered a bogey at the par-5 11th after his second shot sailed into a water hazard, immediately putting pressure on the tournament leader. The situation deteriorated further at the 12th, where he hooked his tee shot well left into water, leading to a double-bogey six that dropped him to 10-under par.

Obviously I am really disappointed, Aberg said after finishing in a tie for fifth at 9-under following a crushing 76. It got away from me quick there. Yeah, it was just poor swings. Obviously really disappointed. I would have loved to be standing where Cameron is standing right now.

The collapse created an opportunity for both Young and Fitzpatrick to seize control of the championship. Fitzpatrick capitalized first, making consecutive birdies at the 12th and 13th holes to claim the outright lead at 13-under par.

Two-time major champion Xander Schauffele finished third at 11-under par after a final-round 69, one shot ahead of Scotland Robert MacIntyre, who also closed with a 69. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion from 2023 and 2024, ended his week with a 71 to finish tied for 22nd.

Young victory represents his second PGA Tour triumph following his breakthrough at the 2025 Wyndham Championship. However, The Players Championship carries significantly more prestige as the tour unofficial fifth major, attracting one of the strongest fields in professional golf.

To have now put my name on two different tournaments, and a big one like The Players, I mean, it is incredibly special and I am hoping that I can continue that throughout the season, Young said while celebrating with his wife and three children beside the iconic tournament trophy.

The championship showcased the demanding nature of TPC Sawgrass, where even the smallest mistakes can prove costly and mental fortitude often determines the outcome. Young ability to execute under extreme pressure while his competitors faltered demonstrated the champion mindset required to succeed at golf highest level.
