Cagliari Forward Yael Trepy Remains Sedated as Respiratory Function Improves
Cagliari forward Yael Trepy remains sedated and on a ventilator after losing consciousness in a swimming pool. His respiratory function has improved, but the hospital says his prognosis remains guarded.

Cagliari forward Yael Trepy remains in hospital under pharmacological sedation and on a ventilator after losing consciousness in a swimming pool in Sardinia, BBC Sport reported. The 20-year-old was taken by air ambulance to the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari after being pulled from the pool at a villa on Sunday afternoon.

Watch the highlights:

Cagliari issued an update from the hospital on Tuesday. According to the medical statement shared by the Serie A club, Trepy was free of fever and his respiratory function had improved compared with the severe condition in which he arrived. The hospital said his prognosis remained guarded.

Doctors indicated that sedation could be reduced gradually if Trepy’s condition continues to improve. For now, however, he remains sedated and supported by a ventilator. Neither the hospital statement nor Cagliari provided a timetable for any further change in his treatment, making the guarded prognosis the clearest current assessment of his condition.

BBC Sport reported that Trepy had been in the pool with friends. It is believed that he encountered difficulty after moving into a part of the pool where he could no longer touch the bottom. The report did not state that a definitive cause for his loss of consciousness had been established.

The incident occurred during a weekend off for Cagliari’s players. The club had beaten Arezzo 1-0 in the Coppa Italia on Friday, with Trepy playing 54 minutes in that match. Sunday’s emergency therefore came two days after his appearance in Cagliari’s competitive victory.

Trepy came through Cagliari’s youth setup after joining the club’s academy in 2022. Before moving to Italy, he began his youth career with Parisian club US Creteil-Lusitanos. He made eight Serie A appearances last season and scored once. Cagliari and the Sassari hospital have limited their latest public update to his present treatment, the improvement in respiratory function and the continuing uncertainty reflected in the guarded prognosis. Cagliari compete in Italy’s top division.
