Cagliari forward Yael Trepy wakes from induced coma
Cagliari forward Yael Trepy has been brought out of a medically induced coma and taken off mechanical ventilation, two days after he was pulled unconscious from a swimming pool in Sardinia. BBC Sport reported the update on Tuesday following a statement from the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where the 20-year-old is receiving treatment.
Watch the highlights:
The hospital said Trepy’s sedation and ventilation were reduced gradually during the day, after which he regained consciousness. Dr Stefania Milia, director of the hospital’s Emergency and Intensive Care Unit, said he was alert and able to co-operate with medical staff. The update said there were no evident neurological deficits at that stage.
Trepy remains in intensive care and continues to undergo close respiratory and clinical observation. An earlier hospital update on Tuesday said he had no fever and that his breathing had improved from the severe condition recorded when he was admitted. Despite that progress, doctors said his prognosis remained guarded, leaving the timetable and extent of his recovery uncertain.
BBC Sport reported that Trepy was airlifted to hospital after the incident at a villa on Sunday afternoon. The broadcaster said he had been in the pool with friends and was thought to have encountered difficulty after entering a section where he could no longer touch the bottom. The precise circumstances were not established in the hospital update.
The incident occurred during a weekend away from club duties. Cagliari’s players had been given time off after a 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo on Friday. Trepy played 54 minutes in that match, his latest appearance for the Serie A club before he was admitted to hospital.
Trepy joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 after beginning his youth career with Paris club US Creteil-Lusitanos. He progressed to the senior side and scored once in eight Serie A appearances last season. The immediate focus is now on his condition, with the latest confirmed medical information showing a recovery of consciousness and improved respiratory function while intensive-care monitoring continues.
