Coco Gauff Advances to Dubai Championships Semifinals with Dominant Performance
The American star delivered a commanding straight-sets victory over former world number one to reach her third semifinal of the 2026 season.

Coco Gauff continued her impressive start to the 2026 season with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory over former world number one Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships. The 21-year-old American showcased the mature game that has made her one of the most consistent performers on the WTA Tour, combining aggressive baseline play with tactical intelligence beyond her years.

Gauff started the match with clear intent, breaking Muguruza's serve in the opening game and never allowing the experienced Spaniard to settle into a rhythm. The 2023 US Open champion's forehand was particularly impressive, with 23 winners coming from that wing as she consistently found angles that stretched Muguruza around the court. Gauff's improved serve also played a crucial role, landing 71% of her first serves and winning 85% of those points.

The second set saw Gauff raise her level even further, as she raced to a 5-0 lead before Muguruza could register her first game. The American's court coverage was exceptional throughout, turning defense into attack with remarkable consistency. Her ability to retrieve seemingly impossible shots and turn them into offensive opportunities left spectators in awe and frustrated her opponent visibly on multiple occasions.

Muguruza, who reached the quarterfinals with impressive victories over seeded opponents earlier in the week, struggled to cope with Gauff's pace and precision. The two-time Grand Slam champion managed just 12 winners compared to Gauff's 31, and committed 28 unforced errors in what became an increasingly one-sided affair. The Spanish veteran's usually reliable forehand broke down under pressure from Gauff's consistent depth and pace.

The victory marks Gauff's third semifinal appearance of the young season, following strong showings in Adelaide and at the Australian Open where she reached the fourth round. Her current ranking of world number 4 reflects her consistency over the past 18 months, but performances like this suggest she has the weapons to challenge for the top ranking in the coming months. Gauff's team, led by coach Brad Gilbert, has clearly focused on adding more variety to her game while maintaining the aggressive baseline style that brought her initial success.

Gauff will face either world number 2 Iga Swiatek or surprise quarterfinalist Elena Rybakina in Saturday's semifinal. Both potential opponents present unique challenges, with Swiatek's clay court pedigree translating well to hard courts and Rybakina's power game capable of overwhelming any opponent on her day. Regardless of the opponent, Gauff's current form suggests she will enter the semifinal as the favorite to reach her second WTA 1000 final of the season.
