Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Dubai Championships Due to Injury Concerns
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from this week's Dubai Tennis Championships citing a minor wrist injury that requires rest and treatment.

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Dubai Tennis Championships just hours before his scheduled first-round match, citing concerns over a persistent wrist injury that has been bothering him since the Australian Open. The 24-time Grand Slam champion made the decision after consulting with his medical team and coaching staff.

The Serbian star, who recently reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking, was expected to be the top seed at the ATP 500 event in Dubai. His withdrawal comes as a disappointment to tournament organizers and fans who were eagerly anticipating his return to competitive action after his victory at the Australian Open last month.

"After careful consideration and medical advice, I have decided to withdraw from Dubai," Djokovic said in a statement released through the tournament. "The wrist issue that developed during Melbourne needs proper rest and treatment to ensure it doesn't become a more serious problem."

Djokovic's withdrawal opens up the draw significantly, with second seed Daniil Medvedev now becoming the tournament favorite. The Russian, who has had mixed results this season, will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to claim his first title of 2026.

Tournament director Salah Tahlak expressed understanding for Djokovic's decision while acknowledging the impact on the event. "While we're disappointed that Novak won't be competing, we completely support his decision to prioritize his health. The quality of our field remains exceptional."

The injury concern raises questions about Djokovic's preparation for the upcoming hard court season, including the prestigious Indian Wells and Miami Masters events in March. His team has indicated that the withdrawal is precautionary and that they expect him to return to full fitness soon.

With the clay court season approaching later this spring, including the French Open where Djokovic will aim to defend his title, the 37-year-old is taking no chances with his physical condition as he continues his pursuit of tennis history.
