Bury earn FA Cup replay as Gigg Lane draws biggest crowd since 2023 return
Bury drew 1-1 with Harrogate Town in FA Cup qualifying as Gigg Lane welcomed the club's biggest crowd since its 2023 reformation. The result keeps alive their bid for a first-round return.

Bury kept their hopes of reaching the FA Cup first round alive with a 1-1 draw against Harrogate Town at Gigg Lane, where the club welcomed its biggest crowd since being reformed in 2023. BBC News reported that the fourth qualifying round tie ended with Bury securing a replay against their National League opponents.

The Northern Premier League side also created opportunities to win the match, according to the BBC's account. The draw leaves their bid to reach the first round for the first time since their 2019 expulsion from the English Football League unresolved, with another meeting against Harrogate required. Saturday's result preserved that opportunity in front of supporters who described the occasion as a major moment for the club.

The attendance gave the match significance beyond the result. Supporter Mike Hamilton, 77, told the BBC that more than 5,000 people were present, compared with the roughly 3,500 he said normally attended. He described the tie as an especially important fixture. The report identified the gathering as Bury's largest since the club resumed in its current form three years ago.

Other supporters emphasised the return of familiar faces and the effect on the town. Katie Maken, 18, said fans who had not been seen for years were coming back. Phil Lockett, 54, pointed to the financial benefit for the local area, while Chris Helling, 56, spoke about the club bringing people together. Fans gathered at the Staff of Life pub before the game.

The occasion also carried a family connection for midfielder Leo Graham's relatives. His mother, Tracy Graham, and aunt, Lisa Hannaghan, were among those supporting Bury. Speaking before kick-off, Graham's mother said she hoped her son would score but put a team victory first, while his aunt described attending every week.

Bury's recovery follows their removal from the EFL in 2019 amid financial problems, after a proposed takeover by C&N Sporting Risk collapsed. The unified club returned to Gigg Lane in 2023 following a vote to merge with Bury AFC. The Harrogate draw now gives that rebuilding club another chance to advance in the FA Cup.
