Burrage and Dudeney reach Wrexham second round with straight-set wins
Jodie Burrage and Alicia Dudeney advanced to the second round of the Lexus Wrexham Open on Wednesday, both winning in straight sets at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre. BBC Sport reported that the pair joined fellow Briton Hannah Klugman in the next round of the World Tennis Tour W100 tournament.
Burrage defeated the Netherlands' Eva Vedder 6-2, 7-5 in the opening match of the day. Vedder was ranked 180th in the world. The result earned Burrage a meeting with fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue of Germany, with the second round scheduled for Thursday as the singles draw moves towards the quarter-finals.
Dudeney, ranked 232nd in the world and seventh among British women, beat Germany's Tessa Johanna Brockmann 6-4, 6-4. She will play Switzerland's Susan Bandecchi, the seventh seed. Neither British winner needed a deciding set to secure her place alongside Klugman in the last 16 in North Wales.
The victory continued Dudeney's successful run on British courts. According to the LTA, she arrived after taking the singles title at the Lexus British Pro Series Birmingham without dropping a set. She beat Manon Leonard 6-4, 6-3 in that final, collecting her sixth singles title of 2026 and her fourth of the year on home soil.
Burrage also brought a recent trophy from Birmingham, where she partnered Australia's Lizette Cabrera to win the doubles title. The LTA reported that they went through the tournament without losing a set, defeating Victoria Allen and Stephanie Visscher 6-4, 7-5 in the final. Wrexham has now added a singles victory to Burrage's recent results.
Elsewhere in Wednesday's draw, Czech player Anna Siskova recovered from a set down to eliminate Alina Charaeva 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Defending champion Mimi Xu is not competing in Wrexham this year, having chosen the W75 tournament in Saguenay, Canada, instead, BBC Sport reported.
The Wrexham event runs until 25 October. Tennis Wales describes it as Britain's biggest women's tournament outside the grass-court season this year. Singles quarter-finals are scheduled for Friday, followed by the semi-finals on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
