Burnley report £9m loss as record revenue and investment reduce debt
Burnley reported record turnover of £144.5m and a sharp reduction in net debt in their latest accounts. An Everton compensation payment included in the results remains subject to appeal.

Burnley have reported a £9m annual loss despite record revenue, with their newly filed accounts also showing a substantial reduction in debt. The club announced on Wednesday that Burnley FC Holdings Limited's results cover the year to 31 July 2026, including its 2025-26 Premier League campaign. Turnover rose to £144.5m from £71.7m a year earlier.

Watch the highlights:

In its statement, Burnley attributed the revenue increase to Premier League broadcasting and commercial income. Total borrowings fell from £142.4m to £86.2m over the year. Net debt, a separate measure, dropped from £129.5m to £62.9m. The figures therefore show a lower debt burden at the reporting date, alongside a loss for the financial year.

Investment from the ownership group helped fund a £77.7m net repayment by the club's parent company. Burnley said the amount owed to the club by that company consequently fell from £81m to £3.3m. The repayment was another significant change disclosed alongside the higher turnover and reduced borrowing figures in the club's announcement.

BBC Sport reported that the results also included £38.8m in compensation from Everton over its 2021-22 profit and sustainability rules breach, which was found to have affected Burnley's chances of avoiding relegation. Without that payment, the BBC said, Burnley's annual loss would have been £47.8m rather than £9m, a record for the club.

The compensation remains subject to an appeal expected to be heard in January. According to the BBC's account of the financial statements, Burnley's board made no provision for a possible repayment because the appeal's outcome could not be reliably determined or measured. The potential liability ranges from nothing to the full award, leaving that part of the results unresolved.

There are also borrowing deadlines ahead. The BBC reported that £24.2m in bank loans falls due in January and another £21.6m in August. Burnley are negotiating to refinance and expand those facilities. The accounts state that, if an agreement is not reached, the owners would need additional funding to meet the repayments.
