Bukayo Saka says England still hurting after World Cup semi-final defeat

Bukayo Saka says England's players are still dealing with the disappointment of their World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina, despite securing their best finish at the tournament in six decades. In comments reported by BBC Sport, the winger said the belief shared by the squad and supporters had made the exit particularly difficult to absorb.

Thomas Tuchel's side were close to reaching England's first men's World Cup final since 1966 before Argentina scored twice late on to win 2-1. England subsequently beat France 6-4 in the bronze medal match. That result secured third place, but did not end the country's wait for a second World Cup title.

Saka described the lasting disappointment as a scar and said recovering from it was not something the players could simply decide to do immediately. He recalled the team's unity and confidence that they could win the competition, feelings he said had extended across the country. England are nevertheless trying to move their attention to the new international season.

Their return to action brings a meeting with world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45 BST. It is the first of four Nations League matches over the following two weeks. Saka said England were concentrating on those group games and the task of qualifying for the competition's knockout phase.

The Arsenal winger also backed club team-mate Max Dowman to reach England's senior side. Dowman, 16, remains with the under-19s for this international window. Saka praised his ability, while England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley said the teenager was already capable of playing at that level but would benefit from his current placement.

Carsley said playing time, opportunities to develop alongside friends and easing pressure were reasons for Dowman to stay with the under-19s for now. He expects the youngster to join the under-21s in future and wants to discuss that pathway with Dowman and his parents. His comments supported a gradual progression rather than announcing an immediate change of squad.
