Brydon Carse Removed From England Squad Pending Regulator Investigation

England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been removed from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's while the Cricket Regulator investigates an incident in Derby. BBC Sport reported that Sonny Baker has taken Carse's place in the group for the match scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Derbyshire Police said a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night, 22 August. According to the police statement reported by the BBC, the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards after agreeing to leave the area. Footage shared on social media on Sunday showed Carse in handcuffs and surrounded by police officers.

The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Monday that the Cricket Regulator was investigating the matter. Carse, 31, had been in Derby with Durham team-mates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts. All three hold England central contracts, although Stokes remains contracted despite retiring from international cricket in June. The investigation is ongoing, and no finding against Carse was reported.

Carse has not represented England since the final Ashes Test in January. His withdrawal changes the fast-bowling options available to England for the second match of the Pakistan series, which follows an innings victory at Headingley in Joe Root's first Test since returning as captain. Baker now joins the squad as the direct replacement.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live that the latest incident created a poor image for the team and argued that a punishment capable of deterring future misconduct may be needed. He also said Carse should receive support and acknowledged that it would be difficult if the bowler were made to bear the consequences for broader concerns about player behaviour.

The episode means Root is expected to face questions about discipline as well as cricket when he speaks to the media on Tuesday. Before the opening Test of his second spell as captain, Root had called on England's players to be good role models. For now, the confirmed sporting consequence is Carse's removal from the Lord's squad while the independent regulatory process continues.
