Bruno Guimarães details emotional Newcastle exit and Arsenal midfield role
Bruno Guimarães has described the difficult decision to leave Newcastle and his developing partnership with Declan Rice at Arsenal. The midfielder also reflected on Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich.

Bruno Guimarães has described the emotional difficulty of leaving Newcastle for Arsenal and outlined how he is adapting to his new midfield partnership with Declan Rice. In comments reported by the Guardian, the Brazil international said the decision cost him sleep and brought tears when he said goodbye to his former teammates, despite his desire for a new challenge.

Watch the highlights:

Guimarães joined Arsenal in a £75m transfer after a Newcastle spell that began with his arrival from Lyon in January 2022. His time on Tyneside included Champions League qualification and the 2025 Carabao Cup victory, which ended the club's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. He said the relationships he built made leaving difficult for both him and his family.

The midfielder said he hoped to develop a similarly strong bond at Arsenal and was enjoying life at his new club. His early contributions have included the opening goal in a 2-0 league victory at Sunderland in September and the winner at home against Leeds two Premier League games later, according to the Guardian's report.

Guimarães also explained the flexibility of Arsenal's midfield, where he is working alongside Rice and Martin Ødegaard. He said both he and Rice could operate in several roles, with manager Mikel Arteta still working to find their best combination. Against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, Guimarães played in the deeper position while Rice took on a more advanced role.

That Champions League match finished 2-2, with Rice scoring Arsenal's equaliser in the 82nd minute. Guimarães had earlier been denied a goal that would have put Arsenal 2-1 ahead when Manuel Neuer stopped his close-range header, pushing the ball against the crossbar and away. Guimarães praised the goalkeeper and said he had asked him about the save after the match.

Reflecting on Arsenal's approach, Guimarães said the team had not been satisfied with a draw in Munich and linked that outlook to Arteta's emphasis on winning. He also described the manager's use of video in preparing players. His account combined appreciation for his Newcastle years with an explanation of the expectations and developing midfield relationships at Arsenal.
