Brundle predicts Hamilton can still take wins with big Ferrari step forward
Martin Brundle has backed Lewis Hamilton to return to winning ways in Formula 1, predicting that Ferrari's planned development step will elevate the seven-time world champion back into contention for race victories this season. The former McLaren and Benetton driver believes the iconic Italian outfit is on the verge of a breakthrough.
Watch the highlights:
Hamilton joined Ferrari at the start of this season amid much fanfare, but the initial races have proven challenging as the Scuderia continues to work through reliability and performance issues with their 2026 challenger. However, Brundle, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports, sees brighter times ahead.
'Lewis has lost nothing,' Brundle stated. 'He's still got that hunger and the skills that made him great. Ferrari are working incredibly hard, and I believe they are close to a significant step forward with the car. When that happens, Hamilton will be there to capitalize.'
The British driver has accumulated seven world championships across his career with McLaren and Mercedes, but is yet to take a race win since his high-profile switch to Maranello. Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has publicly backed Hamilton to deliver, acknowledging the adjustment period required when joining a new team.
Brundle, who raced alongside Hamilton during his own competitive career, emphasized the importance of patience during this transitional phase. 'Ferrari has a history of finding performance upgrades that transform their season. The infrastructure is there, the resources are there, and now they have the greatest driver of his generation pushing them forward.'
With the European season beginning in Imola next month, all attention will be on Ferrari's development progress as they aim to close the gap to Red Bull and McLaren at the front of the grid.
